Located in the Waveney Valley not far from Oulton Broad it is over one hundred acres of marshes, fens and peat pools which make up Carlton Marshes, a place described as the Broads in miniature. A haven for wildlife like Snipe, redshank and lapwing who all nest here. Also to be found are mallards, small bearded tits herons and the elusive bittern.
Swallowtail butterfly and the Norfolk hawker dragonfly flit amongst the reed beds. There is a purpose built visitor center and good car parking. Carlton Marshes are one of the best places in the UK for a good range of water snails such as the shinning rams horn snail. Summer evenings see the glow of glow worms. Carlton Marshes are a great place for walking, bird spotting and nature lovers.
