There are over
700 churches in Norfolk. Medieval and Saxon churches, picturesque
thatched churches, and there are more round towers than in any other
county. Some of these churches are to be found in the centre of towns
and village s
whilst others are in splendid isolation.
Angels are a Norfolk speciality, carved from oak or chestnut and set high up in magnificent hammer beam roofs, and on the ends of pews. Below are listed a few of Norfolk’s churches, covering some of the more interesting and unusual features. Explanations are given for the terminology (for the laymen). We hope to give you a flavour of what you can expect, which will enable you to go into more detail, should you wish to do so. May we suggest that you might want to take along a set of binoculars in order to better appreciate some of the finer details both inside and outside the churches. When we produced this section, we were surprised how much interest it generated, and spent many an hour chatting with people we met. It was also nice to find that some churches provided tea and coffee (donations gratefully received) for which our tired researcher was most appreciative. |
