This pretty little village, set in pastoral scenery,
has over the years won the best kept village award. Its large
triangular green of approximately seven acres, is bordered by houses
dating from the 17th and early 18th centuries.
The game of cricket has been played by the villagers for over 150 years.
Some of the cottages that front onto the green are even named after
cricketing terms. When the village team was made up from those who lived
in these houses, the occasional broken window was not a problem.
Nowadays however any breakages must be paid for!
Now as ever the social life of the village centres around the green and
the whole village turns out to watch the match. You can get a good view
of this event whilst enjoying some refreshments from either of the
two village pubs, the 17th century Black Boys inn, or the Georgian
Old Red Lion, both enjoy fine views of the game.

The Aldborough festival has been held here for over 700 years since King
John presented the original charter to the village. This was an annual
livestock fair and for the hiring of servants and labourers, nowadays it
is possible to win a goldfish rather than to buy a sheep.
The village has a well stocked mini-supermarket with
off licence, a butcher, post office and childrens play area located on
the common, walks nearby include the Weaver's Way.
Aldborough is situated inland between the seaside towns of Cromer and
Sheringham and the market town of Aylsham. The National Trust
properties of Blickling and Felbrigg are both within easy access and the
historic city of Norwich some sixteen miles distance. |
