A visitors guide to the village of North Creake located in the North
West of Norfolk. The village of North Creake is an attractive rural
village approximately three miles from Burnham Market on the road
towards the market town of Fakenham.
An Augustinian priory was founded here in the 12th century to the north
of North Creake, now a ruin managed by English Heritage. The monastery
was mostly destroyed by a fire in 1484 and then by an outbreak of plague
that killed most of the local community.
There is a village shop / post office and a public
house The Jolly Farmers, which has good food and drink in traditional
surroundings with a warm and convivial atmosphere. The Creake Abbey
Studios in the village holds a Farmers Market each month on the first
Saturday (excluding January) with around thirty stalls.
North Creake is in a good location for access to the North Norfolk Coast
with its many attractions and also visiting inland Norfolk.
As well as North Creake Abbey in the village, visitors can explore the
lovely scenery with many walks in the area. For a full range of shops
try the market town of Fakenham some seven miles away inland, which also
holds a Farmers Market on the 4th Saturday of each month.
Heading towards the coast is Burnham Thorpe a small
village with Nelson connections, here Nelson was born, the sixth out of
eleven children. He lived in the Parsonage House which unfortunately was
demolished whilst he was still alive. Horatio returned to live in the
village with his wife from 1787 until 1793 when he was given command of
HMS Agamemnon. Nelson fans tend to congregate in the Lord Nelson the
only pub in the village.
