There is a legend attached to this sign. It is said that at midnight on the 1st May each year a ghostly Danish ship appears. This ship then bursts into flame which is said to be the re-enactment of a funeral pyre of a famous Priest King Oscar. Oscar was one of the Danes who plundered the village of South Walsham and became the villages over lord. He died when he was deliberately given a dish of poisonous mushrooms. The sign shows a Saxon warrior and a Danish ship. In the background is a drainage mill and the towers of the two churches of South Walsham. Unfortunately the tower of St. Lawrence which once outshone that of St. Marys is no more. |
